Welcome to the dance theatre blog, StageLife! I’m glad you found your way here. Whether you’re just a fan, an entertainer, or a director or producer, you’re in the right place. My goal is to bring interesting and funny stage secrets and stories your way, as well as tips, resources, and information for other performers and producers.
About the author, Mellilah Jamal: Mellilah is the Director and Choreographer of Lunaria Dance Theatre. It has become a tradition for Mellilah to produce stage shows that feature Lunaria Dance Theatre as well as other local Seattle entertainers, some of whom have included, Caela Bailey, Mark Siano, La Gaviota, and Evilyn Sin Claire. Producing has been quite successful as for two years running, all shows have been completely sold out at 270 people with standing room only!
Mellilah has an extensive background in the fine arts. It all began in grade school where she learned to sing and play the flute. With encouragement from her choir director, she went on to study voice performance in college as a “dramatic coloratura soprano” and received training in acting and classical piano, too. Post college, Mellilah was featured in light operas, was hired as lead soprano vocalist for a prestigious church and performed in community theatre. She also became a certified fitness instructor and received training in Alexander Technique.
After relocating to Seattle, Mellilah pursued belly dancing in 1999. Since then, she has completed Cairo Style 1 through 7 taught by internationally renowned instructor and Cairo star, Sahra Saeeda; and Hadia's Middle Eastern Dancer Teacher Training certification program taught by Hadia, famous Canadian belly dancer. As a popular, professional belly dancer throughout Seattle for 20+ years, Mellilah taught three weekly belly dance classes for 8+ years, performed as a regular house dancer for Taki’s Mad Greek, Marrakesh, and Harissa Mediterranean Cuisine, was the Emerald Rain Professional Belly Dancer- 1st Runner Up in 2010, the 1st place winner of Belly Dance Off! Round 1 in 2015, and performed alongside the Commadors in Montana in 2015!
Mellilah now reserves belly dance for private parties, large stage shows and opportunities with live musicians, as she spends most of her time producing shows, directing and choreographing for Lunaria Dance Theatre, and building upon her skills in theatre, heels dance technique, and as a choreographer.
