Meet the Dancers
Lunaria Dance Theatre is comprised of female dancers dedicated to providing cabaret entertainment featuring dance theatre and raqs sharqi (Egyptian style belly dance). Current company dancers include Alessandra, Amalia, Ava, Fawnia, Genevieve, Gevene, Nivea, Shakti Moon, Yaminah and Mellilah, the artistic director and group choreographer.
MELLILAH founded Lunaria Dance Theater as another outlet to feed her passion to choreograph and her new desire to step outside of the box of “Egyptian style bellydance.” She is a multi-award winning bellydancer and has been a prominent bellydance instructor since 2008. Mellilah has performed alongside The Commadors, has been featured in many of Seattle's iconic restaurants featuring bellydance and has graced the stages of Seattle and beyond. Mellilah most recently won Belly Dance Off: Round 1 2015! Lunaria not only feeds her soul, but gives her an opportunity to share and learn with other beautiful dancers. For ALESSANDRA, dance has been a lifelong passion and source of joy. When she was first introduced to bellydance in 2008 she fell in love instantly, and her journey through this creative and magical art form has continued ever since. Alessandra performs regularly throughout the Seattle area, including being a featured dancer at Marrakesh Moroccan Restaurant and Harissa Mediterranean Cuisine. She is a certified instructor and has previously taught for LA Fitness, City of Seattle Parks and Recreation, Fresh Fitness and Dance, and the University of Washington's Experimental College. AMALIA, known for her exquisite undulations and layering, began performing at an early age with ballet and theatre. Her career in dance took off in 2002 as a member of Rishi's Egypt Belly Dance Company. Since then she has performed professionally throughout the Seattle area, acquiring awards from dance competitions and even performing on live television. She has made other film appearances in TV commercials and has even been in a music video. As a member of Lunaria Dance Theatre, she has found new inspiration and is excited to add dance theatre to her experience. But her talents are not limited to the stage. She also works behind the scenes managing costume design and construction as the head of Lunaria’s costume department.
GENEVIEVE has been dancing in Seattle since 2007. Before that, she performed in the Boston area and began belly dance training in 1998. She has studied with Suzanna Davis and performed in her Egyptian version of Cinderella. In 2014, she studied with Ruby Beh and danced in her year-long project show Crescendo. In December 2015, Genevieve performed in Bellydance Jakarta’s 10th anniversary show and took Tamalyn Dallal’s teacher training in Bali. In January 2018, she will choreograph and perform a horror-themed dance in Kat Welsh’s annual show Horrific. She is honored to have been invited to join Lunaria in the fall of 2017 and is looking forward to collaborating with this great group. www.GenevieveDance.com
GEVENE began her dance career in classical ballet and then quickly fell in love with Middle Eastern dance over 20 years ago. She has studied with many of the West Coast’s top instructors and continues to pursue her love for dance education. Gevene entertains audiences at many Seattle venues and was also featured with Rishi’s Egypt Belly Dance Company on TV. She is delighted to be joining Lunaria Dance Theatre and can’t wait to bring her passion to the stage along side the talented members of Lunaria! Each performance brings new insight towards her growth and continues to inspire her.
AVA is a lifelong dance artist with a passion for learning, creating & performing bellydance. Some of her dance career highlights include a recent performance in Bali, joining Thomas Dolby onstage at The Showbox Market for his world tour in Seattle, and performing for the VIP New Year's Eve party at the Tulalip Casino. Catch her regular bellydance shows in Seattle at Taki's Mad Greek, Petra Mediterranean Bistro, Caspian & Harissa. She has planned, promoted, produced & performed in sold out shows at many venues including Showbox, Triple Door & Hale's Palladium. As a working artist and advocate for the arts, Ava loves how the language boundaries and differences dissolve through dance to reveal a common humanity. www.AvaRaqs.com
NIVEA comes from a diverse background of tribal bellydance, ballroom and Latin dance. Some of her specializes include fan veils, short fans, Bangrah Bollywood, Irish, Flamenco, fire prop and eating, and percussion (zils, doumbek, and riq). Nivea was previously a member of Ghazaal Beledi World Music and Dance Troupe, having performed at the Arizona Renaissance Festival with the group's house band. She has since relocated to Seattle and is pleased to be joining Lunaria Dance Theatre as a company dancer.
FAWNIA Chauvaux is a teacher, therapist, performer & choreographer with an extensive movement background in dance, yoga & physical therapy. Her dance background includes: Ballet, jazz, modern, African, Brazilian & Latin dance. Since 1999, she has taught dance to all ages and currently teaches ballet & contemporary to kids. Also as a certified yoga teacher, she has taught yoga to adults & children. Fawnia holds a BA in dance from the University of Washington with emphasis on world dance and culture. She has performed with Arc Dance, Birblioque Theatre, Oracle Gatherings, Vamola, Show Brazil, Gansango Dance Co, ZumZumZum & Zouk dance. YAMINAH who is known for her grace and animalistic moves began studying the art of dance at the age of 8. Studio trained in ballet, hip-hop, jazz, and lyrical, she has gained an extensive dance foundation. With such a passion for dance, she later in life embarked on a journey to become a certificated Zumba instructor. It was her love for Zumba that lead her to the world of belly dancing. In 2012 she stepped onto the belly dancing scene studying under the direction of Kizmit True and soon after was invited to be one of the original troupe members of Raqs al Raja. Since then she has continued learning the craft by taking multiple workshops, studying under the instruction of Kat Welch, and performing as a solo artist.
Shakti Moon, a Seattle belly dancer, teacher and licensed massage therapist, has been a dance company member of Rishi's Egypt and Rubies on Fire and is currently the director and choreographer for Moon Sirens. Her vibrant and authentic personality shines through in her dance, making her a pleasure to watch. Shakti is excited for the opportunity to join Lunaria Dance Theatre as a company dancer!
